Trading Gold on a Funded Account: Spreads, Stops and Daily Limits

XAUUSD moves enough in an hour to breach a daily limit. What to check about spread, leverage and stop sizing before you take gold onto a funded account.

Gold is the most popular instrument on funded accounts and the one that breaches the most of them. The reason is arithmetic, not difficulty: XAUUSD routinely moves several hundred dollars per ounce-equivalent in a session, so a position sized like a forex pair carries several times the intended risk.

The sizing problem

A 20-pip stop on EURUSD and a "20-pip" stop on gold are not comparable risks. Gold's typical daily range demands wider stops, and a wider stop with the same lot size is a larger dollar risk. Size from the dollar risk, always.

Illustrative only — contract specifications and stop distance change these figures materially.
Account0.5% riskApprox. XAUUSD size on a $8.00 stop
$25,000$125~0.15 lots
$50,000$250~0.31 lots
$100,000$500~0.62 lots
$200,000$1,000~1.25 lots

What to check about the firm

  1. Typical gold spread, not the advertised minimum. Gold spreads widen more than FX during news and rollover.
  2. Leverage on metals, which is often lower than on FX and can prevent a correctly-sized position on a small account.
  3. Daily loss measurement — end of day matters more on gold than anywhere else, because intraday excursions are large.
  4. News trading permission, since gold reacts to the same releases as the dollar.

FundedAxe accounts run gold on Platform 5 at up to 1:100, with end-of-day daily loss measurement and news trading permitted.

Frequently asked questions

Can you trade gold on a prop firm account?

Yes — XAUUSD is available on most MetaTrader-based funded accounts, and on FundedAxe's Platform 5. Check the leverage on metals specifically, as it is often lower than on FX pairs.

Why do so many traders breach accounts trading gold?

Position sizing. Gold's daily range demands wider stops than FX pairs, so a position sized by lot count rather than by dollar risk carries several times the intended exposure.
